This has been a try out some new music (for me) week. First off was Sleigh Bells. I’m still on the fence with them. Can’t decide whether they suck or not. I’m kind of digging the music, but I’m not sold on the singer. I’m listening to Comeback Kid right now and it sounds like a less shoegazing Lush. Sometimes younger bands points of reference seem kind of wierd like Weezer (see Born to Lose) was a big influence, but I’m all about noisy drum machines and hand clapping (Crown on the Ground) right now so that part is cool.

Next up is Crystal Castles. My dashboard has been completely spammed with them lately so I’m going to try it out. First up is a song called Vietnam (my favorite war!). Uh, moving on to song called Black Panther. With song titles like this, you’d think these guys would be kicking out the hippie jams. Now I’m on to a song called Suffocation. I kind of like this one. I’m having having a hard time squaring away this picture of a zombie goth girl hanging out in a graveyard with the synthy laid back kind of music, but maybe it makes perfect sense and I’m a idiot. Can’t say I’m blown away, but the singer is cute.

Now I’m trying out Phantogram. I’m trying them because they have a cool name and they are doing Bonnaroo and I’m trying to get excited about the lineup. The guy sings about as well as I do. I find that inspiring even though I don’t care for the music.

I’m on to the Black Lips who are described as hell raising on the Bonnaroo website. I wouldn’t call this jangly guitar pop hell raising. Hell for me would be having to listen to this all the time. Holy sh$t.

My Bonnaroo picks based on cool sounding band names hasn’t panned out very well. When I look at the Bonnaroo lineup there’s Radiohead (I never listen to them but when I hear them in the background or whatever I always think I should listen to them some more), Bad Brains, who are awesome, but what are they, in their 60’s now? I know and like one song by Major Lazer. Where is the metal this year? Where is the fun?! They really should hire me to pick the bands. It would be a stoner rock, club music extravaganza - all blunts and booty and no bands with short haired dudes with beards. I’m not in an intellectual mood at all lately.

Downloaded a new Skinny Puppy song and it sounded like they’ve hit the rocking chairs.

I’m finally giving Skrillex a chance. I’ve been avoiding his music because he looks annoying as fuck. First up is Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. This is really retarded (sorry!) music - a mix of dubstep and cheesy autotune dance music. Next up is Kill Everybody. Kill everybody with my mix of dance pop and dubstep. If someone wins a Grammy, it usually means they suck. Lord help me, I like some dance pop and some dubstep but this shit is awful.

I’m really trying to be anti nostalgic about music right now. I don’t want to thow on old grunge or metal tunes or Deee Lite or whatever 90’s shit I was into even if that new Mark Lanagan song rocks. I’m completely annoyed with the endless stream of classic alt rock and metal that flows down my Facebook feed. I know. I asked for it. It’s my people or whatever. I just want something new to completely blow me away. Black Moth Super Rainbow kind of blew me away at first, but their music is like cotton candy - Awesome at first, but a little too sweet and cutesy. I wish Beck would make a sequel to Midnight Vultures. That’s what I want right now even if it’s nostalgic for me to want that.
